John Bercow has said he will stand down as the House of Commons Speaker, as well as an MP, before the end of next month. He said he was simply fulfilling his role of letting parliament have its say, adding that he had always 'sought to be the backbenchers' backstop'.

John Bercow was spotted entertaining workers and visitors outside the London landmark as they patiently waited to return to their desks.

A message over the PA system urged people to leave the building following a loud alert at around 10.30 am.

The alarm ended about 20 minutes later and lawmakers, staff and journalists were allowed back into the Palace of Westminster.

Earlier this year MPs were forced out of the commons due to a water leak from the roof that began flooding the chamber of the Commons.

Deputy Speaker Lindsay Hoyle announced he was being forced to suspend the chamber as the sound of water dripping drowned Labour MP Justin Madders.

The Houses of Parliament could have to be "abandoned" within 20 years without extensive repair work, Commons Speaker John Bercow has said. The Grade I-listed building suffers from flooding, contains a great deal of asbestos and has fire safety issues.

The water - which poured along the backwall of the chamber high above the Speaker's chair - soaked dozens of seats.

The flood came through a restaurant kitchen on the third floor of the Palace of Westminster and is thought to have come from the outside roof.

Multi-billion pound repairs are needed for the whole Palace of Westminster, which is riddled with asbestos, leaking ceilings, rodents and moths and was described as a 'death trap' by one close to the refurbishment plans.

A lack of fire doors means that Palace of Westminster firemen have to patrol the building at night, turning off lights, computers and other electronic equipment to reduce the risks of a blaze.

Experts have said revamping the historic site could cost as much as £7 billion and take 32 years to complete.

In 2017 MPs voted in favour of moving out of Westminster entirely so Parliament can be renovated before a disastrous fire.

The Commons voted 234 to 135, a majority of just 16, in favour of endorsing the work of a joint committee of MPs and Peers on what to do about the dilapidated state of the building.

MPs and peers will move out of the Palace of Westminster – but are yet to approve the cash or a schedule for works.

Last year the scorching summer caused cracks to appear in the ailing roof walked under by hundreds of MPs every day.

An area inside Portcullis House has been cordoned off and emergency work will be carried out on the glass above to stop it getting worse.

The building next door to the Palace of Westminster was only opened 17 years ago and houses a third of all MPs, several of their coffee bars and restaurants as well as meeting rooms used by committees.

But it has been plagued by faults caused by its design and saw water cascading in on several occasions after more cracks appeared in the roof.
