Portugal began rationing gas Monday as a precaution after 2,000 truck drivers began an open-ended strike over pay, a move that comes at the height of the crucial summer tourist season and during the summer harvest.
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — A labor union spokesman in Portugal says fuel tank drivers are ending an indefinite strike to allow government-brokered negotiations over salaries and working conditions.
Pedro Pardal Henriques says that the seven-day walkout is wrapping up Sunday after members of his Portuguese Hazardous Materials Drivers' Union voted to join Tuesday's scheduled talks with their employer's association, known by the acronym ANTRAM.

The strikers had threatened to paralyze the country at the peak of the summer holiday season. Portugal's center-left Socialist government ordered minimum daily fuel deliveries, while soldiers and police also stocked gas stations.
The truckers are demanding raises that would increase their monthly wage from 630 euros to 900 euros ($705 to $1,007) by 2022.
