The drama played out after Johnson enraged lawmakers by planning a five-week shuttering of Parliament that would suck up most of the time before Oct. 31, the day the UK is currently set to quit the European Union in a departure known as Brexit. The move was widely seen as a ploy to shut out debate on Brexit, which Johnson has promised to deliver on Halloween with or without an exit deal.

Soames said he thought the snap election is all part of the plan for Johnson’s government, and he would not stand in an election.
