3 die preparing for Hurricane Dorian, Orange County officials say ORLANDO, Fla. - Hurricane Dorian is blamed for three Orange County deaths, though the tropical cyclone never officially made it here. The deaths Monday included a man who had evacuated to a Disney resort with his family from a nearby city because of Dorian, officials said Wednesday. Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings reported the other two deaths Wednesday at his final storm briefing at the county’s emergency operations center. All three victims were listed as hurricane-related. As part of its public health response to hurricanes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collects data on hurricane-related deaths.

Humberto's center was about 40 miles north of Great Abaco island as of 2 p.m. ET Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said, whipping parts of the northwestern Bahamas with stiff wind and periods of rain.

Humberto is expected to move farther from the Bahamas as Saturday wears on, but not before it drops up to 6 inches of rain on some islands. That, and wind gusts of up to 60 mph, would be difficult for the Abacos or Grand Bahama, where Dorian left at least dozens of people dead and hundreds missing.

Hurricane Dorian heads for the Carolinas, could bring 'life-threatening storm surge' to the coast

Hurricane Dorian heads for the Carolinas, could bring 'life-threatening storm surge' to the coast Hurricane Dorian strengthened into a Category 3 storm again Wednesday night, with sustained winds of 115 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Its core is forecast to approach the coast of South Carolina, near Charleston, on Wednesday night into Thursday morning, the hurricane center said. Downtown Charleston was experiencing flooding as a result of the storm early Thursday morning, the Charleston County Emergency Management told CNN. Dorian is expected to run parallel along the coast of the Carolinas into Friday. Any deviation to the left could bring the storm's center onshore, according to the NHC.

"Even if you're just talking 2 to 4 inches (of rain), you have to remember a lot of these homes, they don't have roofs on them. A lot of the buildings are already structurally compromised, so even a 50- or 60-mph wind can cause even more damage," CNN meteorologist Allison Chinchar said.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for the northwestern Bahamas, excluding Andros island, the center said.

Humberto's center does not appear destined for the US Southeast coast, contrary to earlier forecasts. It is expected to move out to sea, but outer bands still could drop up to 1 inch of rain on parts of coastal Florida and Georgia by the end of Monday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Humberto's maximum sustained winds were around 50 mph Saturday afternoon. Winds of tropical-storm strength extended up to 90 miles from its center.

TRACK THE STORM

It's expected to become a hurricane after leaving the Bahamas

After it clears the Bahamas, Humberto is expected to become a hurricane in the Atlantic by Sunday night, the hurricane center said.

But the current forecast track predicts Humberto turning away from the US coast -- and possibly heading in Bermuda's direction late next week.

Swells generated by Humberto still could affect the coasts of central Florida to South Carolina through early next week. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions, the center said.

The storm comes at the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, which is usually in the weeks surrounding September 10, when weather conditions favor storms forming quickly.
