Niger floods force 23,000 from their homes

Niger floods force 23,000 from their homes Floods in southeast Niger have forced 23,000 people to flee their homes since early October, officials said Saturday, threatening a new humanitarian crisis in a region already wracked by Boko Haram Islamist violence. Heavy rains have caused the Komadougou Yobe river that flows through the semi-desert Diffa region into Lake Chad to burst its banks, inundating villages, flooding fields and damaging crops. Two villages near the city of Diffa were "completely submerged" and 2,500 households have been forced to move, according to national radio the Voice of the Sahel. Some 400 families were sheltering in a gym in the city, it added.

"I've never seen water rise that fast. I've lived here for 20 years and this is the first time," Jean-Louis, a retiree in Servian, near Beziers, told Reuters TV.

France's national weather authority said storms and heavy rains could continue through to Thursday.

It also said on its website that 12 centimeters (4.72 inches) of rain had fallen in less than three hours in the Bezier area of Herault department.

Rainfall reached 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) in 24 hours in the city of Beziers.
