Three vehicles traveling between the Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua were attacked by the gunmen, Tuesday, citing relatives of the victims and statements from Mexican authorities.
The Arizona Republic said the victims were members of La Mora, an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that is located in Sonora state about 70 miles south of Douglas, Ariz.
Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich Arellano tweeted that she is collaborating with the investigation.
The Republic said the three mothers driving the cars were taking themselves and their children to a wedding in LeBaron, another Mormon community.
