Scientists Made the World's First Chemical Turing Machine

Scientists Made the World's First Chemical Turing Machine It all began with a bucket of goo.Juan Pérez-Mercader of Harvard University’s Origins of Life Initiative leads this research, which uses “one-pot computation”—you know, for easier cleanup—and a chemical oscillator that runs a Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction. Basically, the right combination of chemicals will continue to stir, change, and shift without settling into one homogeneous or even heterogeneous still mixture. The pot is called a BZ-TM: a Belousov-Zhabotinsky Turing machine.

The El Mundo and La Vanguardia news websites said four people had been injured, one of them seriously.

The Catalan fire brigade said it had rescued three injured people, who were being attended by emergency services. Around 20 emergency vehicles were at the site.

The civil defence agency advised people nearby to stay inside with doors and windows shut as a precaution, but added: "There is no evidence of a toxic cloud."

Local trains between Tarragona and neighbouring Port Aventura were suspended on police orders, the train operator Rodalies said, while the regional transport authority said some roads had been closed. (Reporting by Nathan Allen and Albert Gea; Editing by Ingrid Melander and Kevin Liffey)
