According to an indictment released to the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn on Monday, new details have emerged in the corruption case regarding the award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar. Prosecutors first disclosed details of the bribes paid to members of the FIFA executive committee to buy their votes in favor of Qatar as host country for the 2022 World Cup.
Nicolás Leoz, then president of CONMEBOL, Ricardo Teixeira, former president of the Brazilian Federation, and Julio Grondona, a third South American official, received bribes to vote in favor of Qatar at the meeting of the executive committee of the 2010 FIFA; which would have greatly helped the emirate to win 14 to 8 against the United States. These allegations against the three members of the FIFA executive committee were confirmed by Alejandro Burzaco, a former executive of Argentine television, who had already testified in 2017 against the three men.
Could the NHL play games in North Dakota, New Hampshire if season resumes?
It's definitely an interesting thought for games to be played at a neutral site, but practices and games would be crammed into a small period of time leaving players little time to rest ahead of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Regarding the 2018 World Cup, Jack Warner, President of CONCACAF, and Rafael Salguero, then President of the Guatemalan Federation, were respectively paid five million and one million dollars in bribes to vote in favor of Russia, according to the indictment. Grondona, who died in 2014, and Leoz, who died last August, avoided extradition, as did Warner and Teixeira, who found refuge in South America. Salguero pleaded guilty in 2018 to two counts of conspiracy to commit electronic fraud, one to charges of extortion and one of money laundering.
Finally, former leaders of the 21st Century Fox, Hernan Lopez and Carlos Martinez, were also accused on Monday of buying CONMEBOL officials to obtain information about the World Cup broadcast rights auction. Historically broadcast by ESPN, it is Fox which inherited the TV rights of the tournaments of 2018 and 2022.

Putin’s Long War Against American Science .
On Feb. 3, soon after the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus to be a global health emergency, an obscure Twitter account in Moscow began retweeting an American blog. It said the pathogen was a germ weapon designed to incapacitate and kill. The headline called the evidence “irrefutable” even though top scientists had already debunked that claim and declared the novel virus to be natural. As the pandemic has swept the globe, it has been accompanied by a dangerous surge of false information — an “infodemic,” according to the World Health Organization. Analysts say that President Vladimir V.
