A spokesperson said the Commission regrets the early resignation of Professor Ferrari.

The departure of the Italian researcher was first reported by the Financial Times, where Mauro Ferrari spoke to express his immense disappointment with the response of the Union to the epidemic of coronavirus .

Ferrari said the FT regrets the institutional resistance and the internal bureaucratic struggles in front of its proposal of a vast scientific program to fight against the coronavirus.

"I arrived at the CER as a strong supporter of the EU (...) COVID-19 completely changed my opinion," he said in the statement sent to the Financial Times.

The ERC, which said it regretted these statements by Ferrari, said that it had asked Ferrari to resign from its post on March 27, accusing it of a lack of understanding of its role as president of the organization as well as of personal and exteriors carried out at the expense of total involvement in the work of the European agency.
