BARCELONA (Reuters) - Spain reported Friday its lowest number of deaths in one day since March 24 due to new coronavirus, fueling hope a tipping point in the epidemic that could lead the government to ease one of the strictest population confinements in the world.
Spain has recorded 605 deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, for a total of 15,843 since the start of the epidemic, the Ministry of Health announced. This total balance is the second highest in the world behind Italy.

However, the rate of increase in deaths has fallen to 4% compared to 20% two weeks ago.
The total number of cases of contamination in the country now reaches 157,022 against 152,446 Thursday.
The slowdown observed in the spread of the coronavirus and in the increase in the number of deaths has led the Spanish leaders to begin to evoke a relaxation of the confinement of the population, in force since mid-March.
"Any step in the direction of loosening such an intense containment must be done with extreme caution," said Pablo Iglesias, government vice-president, on TVE.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, declared that the principle of containment would certainly be extended until May 3 but that certain restrictions could soon be lifted to lift the Spanish economy from its current paralysis.
