HEALTH-CORONAVIRUS-SOUTH KOREA: Coronavirus: Rebound in new cases in South Korea
SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea on Thursday reported 79 confirmed cases of coronavirus the day before, the highest daily number of new cases since April 5 and the third consecutive day of increase, raising fears of a second wave of the epidemic.
At least 69 of the cases identified this week are linked to a logistics site of one of the largest online sales companies in the country, Coupang, located in Bucheon west of the capital Seoul, said the minister of Health, Park Neung-hoo.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), 11,344 cases of contamination and 269 deaths have been recorded in the country since the start of the epidemic.
South Korea, which was once the main center of the coronavirus outside of mainland China, has been praised for its management of the epidemic. The authorities have set up an extensive screening program, which is attributed to the relatively weak balance sheet of COVID-19 in South Korea compared to other countries.
