MADRID (Reuters) - Spain on Tuesday invited its partners in the European Union to lay down common rules on the opening of borders and the restoration of freedom of movement in the Schengen area.

"We must work with our European partners to define common rules which will allow us to regain freedom of movement on European territory", declared the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arancha Gonzalez, on the radio Cadena Ser.

Even if EU member states have set different dates for the reopening of borders, she added, there must be common principles and rules for the reopening of internal borders in the Schengen area.

Similarly, the minister continued, Europeans will have to agree on the rules concerning the external borders of the area.

With the gradual lifting of containment measures, European states are reopening their borders in dispersed order.

The European Commission invited on May 8th the member states of the Schengen area and the countries associated with the Schengen area to extend the temporary restriction on non-essential travel to the EU by another 30 days, until June 15 .
