Since the first case detected on February 26, the uncontrolled spread of the virus has eroded support for right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro and raised fears of an economic collapse after years of anemic growth.

Jair Bolsonaro, sometimes nicknamed the "Trump of the tropics", has been widely criticized for his handling of the crisis. The country still does not have a permanent Minister of Health after the departure of the two successive holders of this post, due to disagreements with the president.

The Brazilian president rejected all social distancing measures, deeming them harmful to employment and more dangerous than the virus itself. He also promoted two antimalarial drugs as a treatment, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, despite little evidence of their effectiveness.

The health crisis also exacerbated political and social tensions in the country, which resulted in pro and anti-Bolsonaro demonstrations this weekend.
