French voters gave President Emmanuel Macron a massive memo in the corona pandemic: after the second round of local elections, a government spokeswoman on Sunday admitted "disappointing results" for his party La République en Marche. The Greens are the winners: according to projections, they triumphed in large cities such as Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux.
In the capital Paris, the socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo, in alliance with the Greens, secured reelection for six years. Macron's candidate, former health minister Agnès Buzyn, had no chance there. According to his office,
Macron spoke of a "green wave" in France. As a consequence, a cabinet reshuffle is expected. Macron also expressed "concern about the low participation". According to polling offices, only four out of ten French people went to the polls. In the first round in mid-March there had been a record abstention.
