"I may have made political mistakes in peacetime, but war crimes, never!" Said the president, elected in 2016, during a television address.

Hashim Thaçi, along with former parliament speaker Kadri Veseli, was one of the leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during the 1998-2000 insurgency against forces in Belgrade in the former Serbian province. Veseli also dismissed all charges against him.

It is now up to a judge to decide whether the record created by the SPO is sufficiently substantiated to justify the holding of a trial against Thaçi, accused of more than a hundred murders, and the other persons indicted by the SPO. This decision is not expected for several months.

"If the charge is confirmed, I will resign immediately and face the charges," said Thaçi during his speech.

The specialized chambers for Kosovo and the office of the special prosecutor were created in 2015 after the dissolution of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Financed by the European Union, they come under Kosovar law but are made up of international judges.
