Will François Fillon be sent to prison?

No As no warrant was attached to his prison sentence, the former Prime Minister left the court free. The former Prime Minister also appealed, the lawyers judging the sentences of the "severe" defendants : however, in French law, the appeal is suspensive of the sentence, the sentence can therefore only be applied if it is confirmed in a second trial.

If these two years in prison were confirmed, François Fillon could however go to prison: until March 24, the judges had the option of adjusting the prison terms less than or equal to 2 years. Since then, a reform law for justice has brought this threshold to one year, and this sentence should therefore be carried out. However, as specified by “ Ouest-France ”, once imprisoned, François Fillon can then make a request for adjustment of sentence (conditional release, placement under electronic surveillance, etc.)

Will he have to reimburse the amounts mentioned ?

In addition to their fine, prison sentence and ineligibility, the Fillon spouses and Marc Joulaud, François Fillon's successor in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, were ordered to pay more than one million euros damages to the National Assembly, in reimbursement of the sums received under the contracts of Pénéloppe Fillon and the couple's children.

Here too, the appeal against the convictions has left this sentence pending before a new judgment. For the moment, defendants should therefore not get their hands on the wallet.

When will a new trial take place?

The date of the Fillon couple's appeal trial has not yet been announced. But according to the judge, it will not be held before 2021. The hearings, already disrupted before the coronavirus crisis, were even more so with it.
