The "clarification" of the Ibiza affair surrounding ex-Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache proves: Austria has a problem with corruption and urgently has to allow reforms. Otherwise the next scandal is not far.
When the failed car toll was processed, the opposition raised new allegations against Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer (CSU).
The Bundestag investigative committee now received emails that ran through Scheuer's MP account. FDP, Left and Greens, however, speculate that mails are still missing. They are calling for an independent investigative officer to check Scheuer's MPs mailbox for crucial communication. Committee chairman Udo Schiefner (SPD) wants to have this checked.

According to FDP chairman Christian Jung, his parliamentary group is considering going to the Federal Constitutional Court. FDP, Left and Greens want an independent representative because members of the Bundestag office can view Scheuer emails that go to the committee.
The committee of inquiry works out the processes related to the failed car toll. The European Court of Justice (ECJ) had stopped the already legally sealed car toll in June 2019 as illegal. Scheuer is under pressure because he had concluded the contracts to control and collect the toll at the end of 2018 before there was legal certainty. The operators actually envisaged claim damages of 560 million euros after the federal government terminated the contracts immediately after the judgment. Scheuer strictly rejects the opposition's demands and allegations. Arbitration has started in the dispute with the operators Kapsch and CTS Eventim.

Now the opposition is increasing the pressure on the government.
Among Scheuers' mails are numerous letters from a department head at his ministry. Scheuer communicated with him about the car toll via the email address that he has as a member of the Bundestag. The FDP, Left and Greens had pressed for such emails to be sent as evidence for the clarification - along with emails and other documents from the ministry itself.
The emails were sent to the committee on Wednesday - shortly before another meeting on Thursday at which, among other things Witnesses from the Federal Motor Transport Authority were heard. The Ministry apologized for the late transmission in a letter. It was a subsequent delivery, which was due to an «office error».
The Greens chairman in the committee, Stephan Kühn, criticized on Thursday that Scheuer was only providing the investigation committee with information in slices. "We are no longer accepting the Minister's delayed tactics." The investigator is more urgent than ever. "We have to assume that ministerial emails that were sent to other accounts are still missing."
The left-wing chairman Jörg Cezanne said: "The sudden submission of hundreds of emails does not strengthen the confidence of MPs in Minister Scheuer and the claim to full transparency that he has repeatedly postulated." The emails show that the Ministry had been very selective in submitting documents to the Transport Committee a year ago.
The CSU politician Ulrich Lange said that the mails came late, but not too late. Nothing was lost for the committee of inquiry.
