US calls for political solution in Libya, targets smugglers

US calls for political solution in Libya, targets smugglers The United States on Thursday renewed calls for a political solution in Libya as it slapped sanctions over smuggling out of the war-torn nation. Amid the instability, the United States imposed sanctions on a Libyan national, Faysal al-Wadi, two of his associates and the Malta-based company Alwefaq Ltd on allegations of smuggling. The Treasury Department said Wadi and his Maraya vessel have been smuggling fuel and drugs from Libya to Malta, gateway to the European Union.

Tensions between the two Libyan governments

These declarations occur in a context of growing tensions between the countries involved in the conflict in Libya , which opposes the Government of National Unity (GNA), recognized by the UN and based in Tripoli , and Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who reigns over the east and part of the south of this country.

The GNA is supported militarily by Turkey and Khalifa Haftar is supported by neighboring Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Tensions have escalated in recent weeks, with Egypt threatening to intervene militarily if the GNA advances towards the strategic city of Sirte, the next stated objective of the Tripoli forces.

Regional rivalry

The conflict in Libya has worsened tensions between Ankara and Abu Dhabi, whose relations have deteriorated in recent years against a backdrop of regional rivalry and because of the support given by the Turks to Qatar in the quarrel between this country to its Gulf neighbors.

In 2018, Turkey gave the name of an Ottoman dignitary criticized by Abu Dhabi to the street where the Emirati embassy in Ankara was located.
