The Afghan authorities are looking on Tuesday for around 270 prisoners, most of them members of the Islamic State group (IS), on the run since the bloody attack on their prison in Jalalabad (east).

At least 29 people, including civilians and prisoners, perished in the assault on the prison on Sunday by ISIS jihadists, with fighting that lasted until Monday afternoon.

More than 1,300 prisoners tried to escape, a senior Afghan security official told AFP on condition of anonymity. While most were captured or surrendered after being surrounded, "270 are still in the wild," he said.

"Most of the escapees are people from the ISKP," said the official, referring to the Islamic State of Khorasan Province, the group's eastern branch. Some are responsible for attacks, another security official told AFP.

Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the province of Nangarhar, of which Jalalabad is the capital, confirmed that many prisoners were still on the run, without being able to specify the number of IS members among them.

The attack on the prison broke three days of relative calm on the last day of a truce between Afghan forces and the Taliban. ISKP was not participating in this ceasefire.

The Afghan government nevertheless linked the attack to the Taliban, accusing the group of killing 20 civilians and injuring 40 during the ceasefire, breaking the truce 38 times.

The attack on the prison took place after Kabul announced the death the day before of a senior ISKP official, Assadullah Orakzai, during a security operation near Jalalabad.

The Nangarhar, the group's former stronghold in Afghanistan , has been the target of large-scale attacks by the group on several occasions, including a suicide bombing that killed 32 civilians during a funeral ceremony in May.

These attacks continued despite the loss last year by ISIS of its bases in the province, and the government's announcement that the group had been defeated in Nangarhar.

"In the last six months we have managed to strike (ISKP) where it hurts. A lot of their leaders have been arrested or killed (...) so it was kind of revenge to free a few of them. their comrades ", explained the senior security official.

In the opinion of Abdul Sayed, independent researcher and specialist in jihadism in Afghanistan, ISIS "wants to challenge the Taliban monopoly on insurgency and violence against the government in the country".

The group "seems today to have changed its strategy to launch large-scale terrorist attacks in Nangarhar and Kabul, and thus prove that it exists", he believes.
