At least 31 pro-Turkish Syrian fighters were killed in northern Syria, in an ambush by Kurdish forces. This is the highest toll since the Turkish offensive against northern Syria in October 2019, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The incident took place in a village near the town of Aïn Issa, in the northern province of Raqqa. Pro-Turkish Syrian fighters attempting to advance towards the locality fell into a minefield laid by the SDF, the Syrian Democratic Forces, a coalition dominated by Kurdish militias and supported by the United States.

Fighting then erupted between the attackers and the SDF who withdrew from the village to lure pro-Turkish rebels into the trap, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. After the heavy losses suffered, rebels close to Ankara and Turkish artillery shelled the area of Ain Issa violently with rockets and large caliber bombs. The bombardments lasted for hours.
A forgotten frontThe remains of the killed combatants have been returned to pro-Turkish groups under the supervision of Russian forces present in the region.
The sector of Aïn Issa is a forgotten front in Syria, in almost permanent activity. Rebels close to Ankara, supported by the Turkish army, are stepping up attacks in an attempt to strengthen their positions there. Faced with them, the SDF engaged in guerrilla actions, and the Russian army, deployed in the region, intervened between the belligerents.
