The grim milestone was passed after German health authorities recorded 22,268 new cases on Thursday, and 389 deaths.

The total number of corona infections in Germany thus doubled within one month. On October 30, the RKI reported almost 500,000 cases of infection. The number of Covid-19 patients in the intensive care units increased from around 360 at the beginning of October to more than 3800.
The state with the most confirmed corona cases is North Rhine-Westphalia, where more than 250,000 infections have been detected. This is followed by Bavaria with almost 198,000 cases and Baden-Württemberg with almost 143,000 infections.
On Wednesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the heads of government of the federal states agreed to extend the partial lockdown until at least December 20 and to tighten it in some areas due to the high number of Corona cases. Although the "dramatic, exponential growth" has stopped, Merkel said on Thursday as a reason in the Bundestag. But there is now only a "sideways movement" and no decrease in the numbers.
In countries like France and Italy, the number of corona deaths is still significantly higher than in Germany. According to official information, more than 50,000 people died in connection with a corona infection in each of the two countries.

BERLIN (AP) — Officials in Germany said Friday that they are taking the potential for attacks on mass vaccination centers into consideration as they set up sites to prepare for European Union regulators authorizing the first coronavirus vaccines. Britain gave the green light Wednesday for emergency use of a vaccine made by German firm BioNTech and U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The European Medicines Agency has indicated it may not decide whether to grant its authorization until Dec. 29, about two weeks later than Germany had expected to launch a national immunization drive.
