World Tourism restart: Travel association calls for top meeting

For a restart in the travel business after the second Corona wave, German travel agencies and operators are calling for a tourism summit.

A group of politics and industry experts must develop a concept for safe travel, the association said on Friday. Tourism needs prospects for a new beginning. "The EU and Germany should work hard to increase the speed of vaccinations," it said.

The EU states agreed on Thursday evening to further restrict unnecessary travel, but to leave the borders open. New virus variants should be tracked down more specifically and the vaccination campaign should get better momentum. There should be an EU vaccination certificate, but initially no advantages for vaccinated people, for example when traveling.

The travel association said: "It will be a while before everyone who wants to be vaccinated is vaccinated." A strategy for the transition period is necessary. "We are convinced that an intelligent, risk-based test strategy is the solution here."

The German Hotel and Restaurant Association welcomed the joint, coordinated approach of the EU states. Chief Executive Ingrid Hartges cited the proposals for joint vaccination certificates as an example. "This applies to our guests and especially to our employees from other EU countries." The use of rapid antigen tests to a greater extent would also meet with approval in the industry. "That could help many companies in our industry, especially in the event sector."
