President Joe Biden Continues Hard Line Against Russia, Offers Ukraine 'Unwavering Support'

President Joe Biden Continues Hard Line Against Russia, Offers Ukraine 'Unwavering Support' Biden spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for the first time since taking office. After the president's Friday call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the White House said in a statement that Biden "affirmed the United States' unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia's ongoing aggression in the Donbas and Crimea.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy held talks with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul. The visit comes amid tensions between Kiev and Moscow over Ukraine ’ s eastern Donbass region. The United States informed Turkey as per the Montreux convention sent two warships through Turkish straits towards the Black Sea, Turkish foreign ministry said the warships will stay in the black sea until May 4. Late on Friday Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed with his Turkish counterpart over the phone the Ukraine crisis, and the presence of US warships in the Black Sea.

To many Americans, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is merely a character in the U. S . impeachment drama, an awkward English speaker from a remote, corrupt country that would be eaten up by Russia if not for U. S . assistance. But the former comedian who took Ukraine by storm earlier this year is much more than that: He’ s the only kind of threat Russian President Vladimir Putin has any reason to fear. He’ s still supported by a majority of Ukrainians , but no longer by three-quarters of the country.

KYIV (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has requested talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the escalating conflict in eastern Ukraine but has received no answer yet, his spokeswoman Iuliia Mendel told Reuters on Monday.

Russia had massed more than 40,000 troops on Ukraine's eastern border and more than 40,000 troops in Crimea, Mendel said.

Zelenskiy will head to Paris for talks on Russia's troop build-up and the escalating conflict in Donbass, she added.

"The president's office, of course, made a request to speak with Vladimir Putin. We have not received an answer yet and we very much hope that this is not a refusal of dialogue," she said.
