  New players pose additional threats to Jerusalem tensions JERUSALEM (AP) — The holy city of Jerusalem, a tinderbox of competing religious and political claims, has repeatedly triggered bouts of Israeli-Palestinian violence. This time around, there have been some additional sparks, including Jewish extremists who, emboldened by their political patrons’ recent election to parliament, staged a provocative march to Jerusalem’s walled Old City chanting “death to the Arabs.” Over the course of a few days, nightly Jerusalem street brawls between Israeli police and disaffected Palestinian residents of the city escalated to cross-border fighting between Israel and Gaza’s Islamic militant Hamas.

The Israeli attack struck targets in the town of HIfa, which lies east of the port city of Latakia. The operation also targeted Misyaf in Hama province. Amman, May 4 (Reuters) - Syrian air defenses shot down several Israeli missiles during raids carried out before dawn on the port city of Lataké, said the Syrian army on Wednesday.

According to a Syrian army statement, the air strikes hit shortly after 2 hours of the morning local time (00:00 GMT) several areas along the southwest coast of Lataké. A civilian was killed and six wounded in one of the strikes that, according to the army, touched a plastic civil plant in the city of Lataké.

Israeli planes targeted a military position near the province of Hama in Syria on Saturday, but Syrian air defenses intercepted and downed some of the rockets, Syrian state television said on Saturday.
