China's new hypersonic missile demonstrated an advanced space capability that caught US intelligence by surprise, report says

China's new hypersonic missile demonstrated an advanced space capability that caught US intelligence by surprise, report says China had made "astounding progress" on hypersonic weapons far more advanced than US officials realized, sources told The Financial Times. The test showed that China had made "astounding progress" on hypersonic weapons and was far more advanced than US officials realized, two sources said, according to the paper. "We have no idea how they did this," another source told the paper.Several countries, including the US, Russia, and China, are competing to develop hypersonic weapons. The missiles fly at low-altitude trajectories at more than five times the speed of sound.

The test took place the same day President Joe Biden confirmed he's concerned about China’s hypersonic weapons capabilities. Chinese officials recently denied that their military had tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile , earlier this year. The Financial Times reported last weekend that China had “ tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile ” that “circled the globe before speeding towards its target, demonstrating an advanced space capability that caught U.S. intelligence by surprise,” though Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Zhao Lijan rejected the claim, saying

Conducted at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, the tests were aimed at helping “inform the development of the Navy’s Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) and the Army’s Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) offensive hypersonic strike,” according to a Thursday statement from the Pentagon. On Thursday, Moscow also confirmed another successful test of a missile capable of carrying hypersonic warheads. Beijing has mocked the US' worried response to China's weapons development , with the editor-in-chief of a Chinese state media group suggesting on Thursday that

The U.S. Army and Navy successfully tested three hypersonic weapon component prototypes on Wednesday, the Navy announced a day later.

The results of the three precision sounding rocket launches will be used to "inform the development of the Navy's Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) and the Army's Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) offensive hypersonic strike," according to the Navy's statement.

Flight tests of the new hypersonic missile will be conducted in the near term. The three tests “demonstrated advanced hypersonic technologies, capabilities, and prototype systems in a realistic operating environment,” the Pentagon added, adding that all the tests were successful. On the same day, President Biden told reporters he was concerned about the new developments around China’s hypersonic weapons program, and Admiral Charles Richard, the head of Strategic Command who commands U.S. nuclear forces, indicated this week that more details about China’s hypersonic

This is a step in the process of the development of a Navy-designed hypersonic missile that consists of a Common-Hypersonic Glide Body and booster, which will be tailored to be launched from sea or land.

In the Navy’s statement, they describe delivering hypersonic weapons as “one of the [Department of Defense’s] highest priorities.”

What China's hypersonic weapons test means for the US

It involved a hypersonic, vehicle-laden, intercontinental ballistic missile traveling thousands of miles before the vehicle launched. The vehicle then operated successfully but missed its intended target by around 40 kilometers. China denies the test was military-related, instead claiming it focused on civilian space exploration.

The United States, China, and Russia are all trying to perfect hypersonic weapons that travel at five times the speed of sound. Ballistic missiles would still travel faster, but the hypersonic missiles have the maneuverability that would help them dodge and become harder for enemies to track.

China's Hypersonic Test: Time To Ditch Nuclear Arms Control | Opinion .
Beijing has also done everything possible to increase American apprehension. Chinese generals and political leaders have periodically made unprovoked threats to nuke the American homeland. There is no defense against hypersonic glide vehicles. Soon, China will be able to drop a nuke on America with almost no warning. Americans think strategic nuclear weapons are unusable. Chinese strategists obviously do not agree. Gordon G. Chang is the author of The Coming Collapse of China. Follow him on Twitter: @GordonGChang.
